A private Tokyo guide, your route

A government-licensed guide meets your group on foot and travels with you by train to the sights you choose, Senso-ji included for as long as you want. It's the flexible option for families and for anyone who wants depth, not a fixed loop.

Private Tokyo Tour with a Licensed Guide

About this experience

Japan Guide Agency's private tour has 4,853 reviews at 4.9 stars. You pick 4, 6 or 8 hours, and the listing sets the pace: about 2 to 3 sites in 4 hours, 3 to 4 in 6, and 4 to 6 in 8. The guide holds a national licence, and guests say the guide got in touch before the day to plan the route. Asakusa and Senso-ji are on the list of suggested sights, alongside the Imperial Palace, Meiji Jingu, Tsukiji, Ueno, Yanaka and Shibuya.

The price needs reading. The $107 from-price is per person and changes with group size, so check the total for your party on Viator. Your own train fares and entry fees are extra, and so is lunch. The guide's entry fees are covered for sights on the listing's itinerary. There is no car: you travel by subway, and guests say the guide teaches them the system as you go.

One review gives a useful warning: Senso-ji, Nezu Shrine and Shibuya in 6 hours felt rushed, since they're far apart. Pick sights close together, like Asakusa, Ueno and Yanaka, and you'll get a full hour or more at the temple. Dates can be changed up to two days before.

  • 4, 6 or 8 hours on a route you choose
  • As much time at Senso-ji as you want
  • Learn the subway with a local
  • Wheelchair and stroller accessible, says the listing

What we saw in one day with Taka would have taken us three days travelling by ourselves. He knew the key places to visit and was very informative.

Tips before you book

  • Group sights by area. Asakusa, Ueno and Yanaka fit in one day; Asakusa and Shibuya don't sit well together.
  • Answer the guide's planning message. That's where you shape the day.
  • Carry a loaded IC card and some cash for entry fees and lunch.
  • Start at Senso-ji early. The main hall opens at 6:30 in winter and 6:00 in summer.
