Ninja Food Tours starts you at a standing sushi bar near Kaminarimon and feeds you seven or more local bites in the lanes around the temple, ending at Senso-ji. Book it as lunch: guests say they could not finish the last dessert.

Asakusa Street Food Crawl, 7+ Bites

About this experience

The crawl has a 5.0 rating from 293 reviews, which is rare for a food tour. It begins at Hinatomaru, a standing sushi bar on Kaminarimon Yanagi Koji, and guests consistently name the sushi as the highlight. From there the guide takes you through the side lanes around Kaminarimon, away from the Nakamise crush.

The menu changes with the guide and the day, but reviews list the same core: sushi, soba, tempura, dango, caramelised sweet potato and melon pan, with matcha sweets near the end. Some groups get monjayaki. The listing calls it lunch, and that is accurate: plan nothing else to eat before it. The walk passes Nakamise and finishes with about 20 minutes at Senso-ji.

Twenty minutes is enough to see the main hall and the incense burner, not to hear the full history. If the temple is your priority, add the free self-guided visit afterwards, or swap this for the two-hour walking tour. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are limited, and the operator needs to know a week in advance.

The lovely area at Asakusa was perfect for this outing which included sushi, tempura, soba, dango, and sweet potato treats. [...] One of the best parts was the standing sushi bar with unique types of sushi.

Our family of 4 with 2 children loved the food tour! We all love food and are adventurous eaters but loved the history too. Shino was a wonderful tour guide and was so accommodating for our children too.

Tips before you book

  • Skip breakfast, or eat a small one. It's a full lunch.
  • Send dietary needs at least a week ahead. The operator says it cannot handle last-minute requests.
  • Eat at the stall, not while walking. Nakamise shopkeepers ask visitors to step aside and finish there.
  • Stay on at Senso-ji after the tour ends. The main hall is open until 17:00 and the grounds never close.
