Booking choice: The Senso-ji walking tour, from $30 per person. Check dates Tour details
Denboin is the residence of Senso-ji's head priest, and its garden is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. On a normal day you only see the wall. From Friday 30 October to Tuesday 3 November 2026 it opens with a ticket, together with the Ema-do, the hall that keeps the temple's big painted votive boards.
The event is run by Asakusa Culture & Lights, and every price and time below comes from its official page.
The quick answer
30 October to 3 November 2026, 9:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:30). The Ema-do closes at 16:00. Adults pay 2,300 yen in advance or 2,500 yen on the day; children of elementary and junior high age 800 or 1,000 yen; preschoolers free. Tickets are for a set date but cover day and evening. On 3 November the garden is lit from 17:00 with short dances every half hour.
When is the Denboin garden open in 2026?
Every day from Friday 30 October to Tuesday 3 November 2026, 9:00 to 21:00, last entry 20:30. The Ema-do is open 9:00 to 16:00, last entry 15:30.
The entrance is on the north side of the garden, near the Okuyama gate. Allow an hour for the garden and the Ema-do together.
Go before 15:30 if the painted boards matter to you. After that only the garden is open. Evenings in the garden are quieter on weekdays: 30 October is a Friday, 2 November a Monday, and 3 November is Culture Day, a national holiday, which will be the busiest.

How much are Denboin garden tickets, and where do you buy them?
Adults (high school age and up) pay 2,300 yen in advance or 2,500 yen on the day. Children of elementary and junior high age pay 800 or 1,000 yen. Preschoolers enter free.
Advance tickets are on sale until 23:59 on 29 October through the sellers the organiser lists: Webket, Ticket Pia, Asoview and JTB online, and the ticket machines in Lawson and FamilyMart convenience stores. After that you buy at the gate for 200 yen more.
Every ticket is for one date and covers both day and evening, so you can see the Ema-do in the afternoon and come back for the lit garden on the same ticket. There is also a version with the illustrated catalogue Senso-ji no Ema, in limited numbers, and a discount for visitors with a disability certificate.
This is the one paid ticket at Senso-ji. The main hall, the gates and Nakamise stay free, as our entrance and hours guide explains.

What do you see inside the Denboin garden and the Ema-do?
A pond garden with the pagoda rising over the trees, a mist effect that rolls across it every half hour, and about 50 large votive paintings in the Ema-do.
The garden is a stroll garden around a pond, and the pagoda is borrowed into the view from inside. That framing is the reason to go: you get the five storeys above water and trees instead of above a crowd. From 9:00 to 20:30 a unkai (sea of clouds) mist effect runs about every 30 minutes for roughly 10 minutes, the organiser says. Wait for one.
The Ema-do holds about 50 major ema, the big wooden votive paintings offered to the temple over the centuries, including works by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi and the Edo painter Hasegawa Settan. They are normally hidden from view. If you only have one daytime slot, spend it here.
What is Golden Dragon Night on 3 November?
The garden's lit-up evening on Culture Day: lights from 17:00 to 21:00 and a 5-minute dance every half hour from 17:00 to 20:00, inspired by the temple's Golden Dragon Dance.
The performances outside the Ema-do start at 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00. They are an original piece based on the Golden Dragon Dance, the 18-metre dragon the temple brings out on 18 March and 18 October. Your normal ticket covers it, but you need a 3 November ticket.
The same day, the temple calendar lists the White Heron Dance in the grounds, a procession of dancers dressed as herons. Expect the heaviest crowds of the five days. If you want the garden in peace, come on Friday or Monday instead.
Is there a free light show at Senso-ji during the viewing?
Yes. From 30 October to 3 November a projection show plays on the main hall and Hozomon from 18:00 to 21:30. It is free and needs no booking.
The projections tell the temple's founding story and its 1,400 years with ukiyo-e images, the organiser says. You watch from the open courtyard, which stays open all night anyway.
A good evening plan: the garden at dusk, then the projections, then dinner in the lanes beside Nakamise. Nakamise shops pull their shutters around 17:00 to 18:00, so buy snacks earlier.

How do you combine the Denboin viewing with a tour?
No tour on Viator includes the garden ticket, so book a walk for the context, then go in on your own ticket. A morning walk plus an afternoon in the Ema-do fits in one day.
The flagship Senso-ji walk ($30, 2 hours, 12 people at most) meets at Kaminarimon and covers the main hall, Asakusa Shrine and the back streets. Finish at noon, eat, and you are in the Ema-do with hours to spare before it closes at 16:00. The Guide Star walk does the same route for $13.
For the evening, the 12-dish food tour ($73, 2.5 hours) ends in time for the projections, which run to 21:30. The Ebisuya rickshaw passes the Denboin gate on its route but does not stop; the garden needs your own ticket either way. Is a guide worth it at all? Our guided or self-guided comparison gives a straight answer.

A local guide from Kaminarimon to the main hall and Asakusa Shrine in the morning, so the garden in the afternoon makes sense.
