Kimono and matcha at Maikoya

At Maikoya's tea house in Asakusa, staff dress you in a kimono and do a simple hairstyle, then a host walks you through a tea ceremony on tatami and you whisk your own matcha. It is the calm counterpart to Nakamise, a short walk from the temple, and the photos come with it.

Kimono Tea Ceremony at Maikoya Asakusa

About this experience

Maikoya's tea house is at 1-12-2 Asakusa (see its own website), and this experience has 735 reviews at 4.9. You arrive, pick a kimono and obi, get dressed by the staff, and have your hair put up in a simple style. Then you move to a tatami room with sliding screens and a hanging scroll.

The ceremony is hands-on. The host explains the history and meaning of the tea ceremony, makes a bowl of matcha in front of you, and then you make your own, with Japanese sweets to go with it. Guests say staff take plenty of photos throughout. The whole thing lasts about 90 minutes.

This experience does not include any time at Senso-ji. To see the temple in kimono for a full day, the all-day kimono rental is the better buy. Children under 7 are not allowed in the tea room, and the venue is not wheelchair accessible. Viator caps one booking at six people, but other guests booked elsewhere share the session.

What guests say

★★★★★

There is a lot that goes into getting dressed in a kimono! The staff helped us pick out a kimono the dressed us, did a quick hair style and then we got to take pictures. Next was the tea ceremony. The Host was very informative and funny.

I didn't expect such a beautiful ceremony. From the check-in to the women dressing us in kimono and doing our hair, every part of the experience was wonderful.

The team gave a good explanation of the philosophy and history behind it. We all got to wear traditional clothing and plenty of photos were taken. The session went for about an hour and a half, and was time well spent.

Very clear explanation of the Tea Ceremony & it's history, the rooms' furnitures and art's pieces. Other ladies who helped with our dressing are very fun & cheerful too.

Tips before you book

  • Wear thin, close-fitting clothes. Bulky layers make dressing harder.
  • Book the morning, then walk to Senso-ji. The temple is quieter early and the tea room is a calm break later.
  • Hand your phone to the staff for photos. They are used to it.
  • Tell them about a sore knee before the ceremony. Ask whether you can sit differently.
